Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a rather humbling condition also known as adhesive capsulitis (AC). This is an inflammatory musculoskeletal condition that causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint and often travels down the arm into the elbow. It is more common in women in menopause who have thyroid, diabetes and heart issues, but can also be caused by an event like stroke, lifting, post surgery or it can just happen for no obvious rhyme or reason. Mine started after lifting a bag from a boot which was heavier than expected. Instead of getting better, it worsened. I got an ultrasound and X-ray done which showed no tendon issues but 2 tiny bone spurs, RSI and adhesive capsulitis.
Three stages
- Freezing is acute synovitis (inflammation of the synovial membrane, a tissue that lines the cavities of joints) with sharp pain when you have reached a movement limit which makes getting quality sleep difficult. Can last 2-9 months.
- Frozen is mild pain with severe restriction of motion due to dense fibrosis. The pain in the frozen stage is more of an ache and gentle exercises are more comfortable. Can last 4-12 months.
- Thawing is when there is gradually decreasing pain and increasing movement to resolution. Can last 12-24 months.
What I found difficult
- Putting a bra on with clasps behind my back
- Parallel parking when you turn and extend the arm
- Sleeping
- Reaching my hand to mouth before my elbow had warmed up in the morning
- Carrying handbag or shopping bags on my shoulder
- Putting hair up
- Drying my back
- Using the computer caused aches
- Cutting a pumpkin turned into an extreme sport
- Heat with a hotwater bottle made it worse and the masseuse said keep the showers on the cooler side – but the acupuncturist uses a heat lamp and that’s OK as she said it’s cold inside the area. Also it’s winter and I’m not putting anything cold on it.
What I tried
I tried multiple things together coming from different angles, professional physical, at home exercises, emotional release, frequencies, food, supplements etc.
- Physical journey – I could move my arm 30% more to shoulder height after 1 physical journey.

- Pillows for sleeping – this is a very individual thing. I found too many pillows hot and hard to turn in. One pillow helps in the first and maybe second stage for leverage and cushioning against bumping it.
- MSM – due to sulphur content, creates gas that could kill a goat
- Weleda tendonitis cream – smelled nice and felt nice putting it on, but didn’t notice any difference in mobility.
- Castor Oil packs – can be messy but skin is great and over time helps
- Nurofen – to sleep with less pain in the early stages – not great on liver.

Tips
It is important to address the root cause as a third of people develop frozen shoulder in the other shoulder within 5 years. It rarely happens in the same shoulder twice.

Before strapping on bracelets we need to unpack what is going on and what stage you are at.
