Understanding Homeopathic Potencies

Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine developed in 1796 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann, based on two core principles:

  • “like cures like” (treating symptoms with substances that cause similar symptoms in healthy people)
  • “law of minimum dose” (extreme dilution increases potency).

Practitioners use substances from plants, minerals, and animals, which are repeatedly diluted in water or alcohol and shaken in a process called “potentisation,” (succussion) or trituration (grinding with the non-active base ingredient) often resulting in remedies containing no molecules of the original substance.

The remedy dilutions are numbered according to the dilution scale eg. 6X, 30C, 200C, 50,000LM or 100,000D.

The Numbers

Two parts of the potency label describe how this preparation was done:

  • The number indicates how many dilution steps have occurred.
  • The letter indicates the ratio of dilution used at each step.
    For example:
    – 6X means six dilution steps using the decimal scale.
    – 30C means thirty dilution steps using the centesimal scale.

The Decimal Scale (X or D)

The X scale (also called the D scale) uses a 1:10 dilution ratio.
This means each step contains:

  • 1 part original substance
  • 9 parts diluent (traditionally lactose or sucrose for pellets, and alcohol/water for liquid preparations)

After each step, the mixture is succussed or triturated before continuing to the next dilution.
Example: Preparing a 6X Remedy
1 part original substance + 9 parts lactose or sucrose → 1X
1 part of the 1X mixture + 9 parts lactose or sucrose → 2X
Continue this process until reaching 6X

The Centesimal Scale (C or CH)

The C scale (sometimes written CH) uses a 1:100 dilution ratio.
Each step contains:

  • 1 part substance
  • 99 parts diluent

Because the dilution step is larger, the potency numbers in the centesimal scale often appear higher.
These comparisons are very rough approximations based purely on dilution ratios. In practice, remedies prepared using different scales are not considered directly interchangeable, since the preparation methods differ.

LM or Q Potencies

LM potencies, also called Q potencies or 50-millesimal potencies, were introduced later in the development of homeopathy by Samuel Hahnemann in the sixth edition of the Organon of Medicine.
Each step involves an approximate 1:50,000 dilution, combined with a unique method of trituration, dilution, and succussion. Remedies are typically prepared using alcohol and water solutions and are often administered in liquid form.
LM potencies are written as:

  • LM1
  • LM2
  • LM3

M Potencies

M potencies refer to very high centesimal potencies within the C scale. The letter M comes from the Roman numeral for 1000, meaning: 1M = 1000C
Examples include:

  • 1M (1000C)
  • 10M (10,000C)
  • 50M (50,000C)
  • CM (100,000C)

These high potencies became more common in the late 1800s and early 1900s through practitioners such as James Tyler Kent, who helped popularise their use in classical homeopathic prescribing. Because these potencies involve extremely large numbers of dilution steps, they are generally prepared by specialised homeopathic pharmacies using carefully standardised methods.

Healy and Homeopathy Numbers

Within Healy, the Aura Analysis, Coaching Analysis, Essential Oils, and Business Suite programs use the Homeopathic number system, but in a slightly different way. Follow the links for the nuances of each program.

Aura printable potencies explained

  1. RELEVANCE The first number indicates how important/relevant/need to deal with the issue. The closer to either 100% or -100% the more rebalancing work is required. Positive percentages indicate the present state is more current, noticeable, surface level and client is aware of. Negative Relevancy means the issue is present but may not be activated, long term, deep rooted, in the subconscious or not aware of. anything under +/-62% is balanced enough and not a serious problem.
  2. INT = Intensity/how much it impacts the intention. The second number is measured out of 10, it describes the level of readiness the person is to be confronted with the issue and willingness to take action. The higher the number the more obvious the issue is.
  3. POT = Potency. The third is a letter based in homeopathy dilutions/potencies and where in the field the situation lies or how to address the topic – see chart below.
  • D (10X) relates more to cause in the foreground – physical/material issues that are manifesting – on the bodily platform, through diseases, pain, defects (visible in reality) well anchored/repressed for a long time
  • C (100X) relates to consequence in the foreground – more mental issues on the psychological level through fears, sorrows, stress, energy deficiency, concentration disorders, communication problems, motivation disorder, planning operations, emotional charge not expressed
  • LM (50000X) relates to cause or consequence but in the background – karmic/Spiritual issues on the spiritual level through lack of joy in life, trust, inspiration, vision, purpose – based on erroneous beliefs, to do with image, vision, creativity, intuition and making the right decisions
  • The mental aura is a thought or belief that needs working on.
  • The higher the number of these dilutions (D, C, LM) the deeper the issue that has penetrated the layers of consciousness and the need for a more powerful treatment to restore balance. Numbers are an indicator of how materialised/manifested the issue is, lower numbers are very clear, aware to client, higher numbers like 100,000 are diluted/subtle/not manifested/unaware. ie C1 = very clear consequence, D1 = very clear cause.
  • You will still have to do the work (journal, meditate, process etc) but the frequencies will support you energetically.
  • 1-60 (I-LX) – Incoherence in actions – wrong actions
  • 100-400 (C,CC,CD) – Incoherence in thought pattern – wrong thinking
  • 1000-2000 (M-MM) – Incoherence in the chose lifestyle. Lack of trust.
  • 10,000-100,000 – Incoherence in a life theme
  • IE6 – Karmic issue
  • IE12 – Parental Issue
  • IE 24 – Issues with Grandparents
  • IE36 – Issues with ancestors

If you use decide to take the physical form of Schuessler Salts, these are usually potentised at 6x.
